William Wallace, Jr. (1864-1939) was a Helena, Montana, attorney. Collection (1883-1940) consists primarily of clippings about his life, including his 1879 steamboat journey up the Missouri River to Fort Benton; his election to the first state legislature in 1889; his fifteen years as legal counsel for the Northern Pacific Railway Company; his service as Assistant U.S. Attorney General; and his work for the Enemy Alien Bureau for the Port of New York during World War I. William Wallace, Jr. was born in Syracuse, New York, on January 28, 1864, the son of William and Helen Carpenter Wallace. He began high school at the age of ten, and, although he never matriculated at Harvard, he passed the finals at the age of fifteen. From 1879 to 1880 he worked on his father's sheep ranch in Montana.
